If you followed this blog and liked the recipes that were posted on here, please visit my other blog, Shelly's Simple Kitchen. I took a few months off but plan to be back posting regularly with new recipes that we've been trying out in our house. I just did a freezer cooking session this past week. I had so much fun doing it! I haven't done it in a while and it will be so nice to have those meals to use. If you are interested in those recipes, I provided the links for them on the recipe blog.

I do not plan to come back to posting here at Centsible Shopping. God called me away from this and I am SO GLAD I listened!! I have not regretted it at all. Every now & then I find a great deal that I think would be great to share; but otherwise am glad to have stepped away. It was something I really enjoyed doing for a time but it became very time consuming and stressful. God has me on a different journey right now...I have recently become a consultant for Thirty-one gifts and I am excited to see what He has in store for me there.

I hope and pray all of you are doing well!!

A couple of months ago, I asked how many people still read this site and I got more of a response than I was expecting. Thank you all so much for continuing to read and support this site.

When I received the responses from that post, I had decided that I would continue posting but was unsure for how long. While I made that decision then, I have still spent a lot of time mulling over what I should do here. Putting the grocery posts together takes a long time...sometimes hours. Quite honestly, I have barely had time to clip my own coupons and file them or go through the ads and actually shop. We've been living off of our stockpile for quite a while now. I have mostly been buying the necessities and fresh fruits & vegetables. I have been snagging some great deals here & there to add to the stockpile, but not a ton.

So for now, I feel led to say that tonight was my last of grocery posts for a while. I will leave the site open because I may come back to it but I need a break. I have enjoyed serving and ministering to people through this site and will continue praying and following God's leading where it is concerned. I do plan to continue posting on Facebook as I have time.

I apologize for any inconvenience!

*I will continue to do coupon classes for people at their request. I've had people ask about my next scheduled class and I just have not had the time available to set a date for one.

Coupon Preview--May 22, 2011

If you want an idea of what coupons we will be getting in Sunday's paper, check them out here. From what I can tell, we are expected to receive 3 inserts this weekend: 1 Smartsource, 1 Redplum and 1 Unilever insert.

Please remember that coupons vary by area so we may not be getting everything listed, or in the amounts listed. I post this just to give you an idea of what is out there! BUT remember, if you see something you can use or want and we do not get it, you can always order from ebay or a clipping service!!

Tried Swagbucks yet????

Have you signed up for Swagbucks yet? If so, what do you think of it? What have you purchased with your Swagbucks? I am able to purchase a lot of necessary/needed gifts or other items using the Amazon gift cards I've purchased with the Swagbucks that I have earned. So basically...I am getting LOTS of stuff for FREE!!

If you've not heard of it, read on...

I use Swagbucks as my search engine in most cases. You earn Swagbucks when you search...not every single time but I do receive Swagbucks at least a few times a day. The Swagbucks accumulate and then you are able to "purchase" items with them. I choose to purchase Amazon gift cards with mine, but there are so many options!

I've learned that, even though I know the web address for Facebook, for example, I can search it through Swagbucks and possibly earn Swagbucks. There is so much you can do with it to earn more Swagbucks but in my opinion, it requires a lot more time at the computer than I am willing to give to it. I just use it for basic searching that I will be doing anyway.

And on Fridays they have Mega Swagbucks Day. This means that your odds of winning larger denominations are higher.

There is no fee for Swagbucks...it's FREE!! Who couldn't use FREE gift cards!?! If you sign up under my name I can get referral points (which would be much appreciated!!). Use this link or click on the button on the sidebar.

I've had quite a few people ask me how to use this or that they forget to use it. One VERY helpful tip is to download the toolbar. I earn Swagbucks for searching when using this (not every time I search...it is random when you win). If you have time to spend more time on the computer trying to earn Swagbucks, then check out this post by Heather from Spectacular Savings. She has outlined the many ways of earning. I choose to just use it for searching...something that I do on a regular basis...nothing extra.

I was able to buy most of my kids Christmas gifts with the Amazon gift cards I bought with my earned Swagbucks. My goal for next Christmas to be able to buy more than just my kids gifts...we'll see how it goes!?

You may already know this but just in case I thought I would leave a comment. I was at the Kroger in Perrysburg yesterday, while I was checking out the cashier told me that starting next week they will only be doubling 3 like coupons instead of 4. I asked if they will still double up to $1.00 and he said yes, just that it will be 3 instead of 4.

Resurrection Rolls

Looking for something fun to do with your kids this weekend? I found this online last Easter and thought I'd give it a try. The kids had a lot of fun doing it. You can tell the Easter story while you make these...it is a great tool for keeping the kids thinking about the true meaning of Easter and have fun while doing it. It's not all about bunnies and such...it is about SO MUCH MORE!!

You will need:
1 package crescent rolls
melted butter
large marshmallows
cinnamon
sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Give each child a triangle from the cresent rolls.
The cresent roll represents the cloth that Jesus was wrapped in.

Give each child a marshmallow.
This represents Jesus and His purity.

Have child dip the marshmallow in melted butter.
This represents the oils of embalming.

Dip the buttered marshmallow in the cinnamon and sugar.
This represents the spices used to annoint the body of Jesus.

Wrap the coated marshmallow tightly in the cresent roll
(not like you would normally roll a crescent rolls but bring the sides up and seal the marshmallow inside)
This represents the wrapping of Jesus’ body after death.

NOTE: I would recommend covering your cookie sheet with waxed paper, parchment paper or foil because even though they were wrapped up pretty well, the marshmallow still did leak out and got the cookie sheet pretty messy. So if you want to opt for a quick clean up...try lining your cookie sheets with something!

Place in a 350 degree oven for 10 to 12 minutes.
The oven represents the tomb.

When the rolls have cooled slightly, the children can open their rolls (cloths) and discover that Jesus is no longer there,

HE IS RISEN!

The marshmallow melts and the crescent roll is puffed up,
but like the tomb - IT IS EMPTY!

Book Review: Max on Life by Max Lucado

I was given a copy of the book titled Max on Life by Max Lucado from Thomas Nelson Publishing to review.

This is a book that was put together by Max Lucado to give answers and insight to the most often-asked questions. Lucado is a pastor in Texas. The book is divided into 7 different sections and questions within those topics are answered. Topics range anywhere from marriage to parenting to finances to forgiveness to questions regarding eternity…and much more! Most of the questions are answered with scripture references to back up his answers.

I thought this was a pretty good book. It would be a great book to keep on hand as a reference for any questions that may arise about faith and life’s challenges. I think it is great that he answers important questions with fairly short but challenging answers. I would definitely recommend it to others!

By now, you've probably realized I didn't get to the grocery posts this week. We were out of town last weekend and I just did not have the time to get to them before jumping into a new week. I have also been trying to get over the possible beginning stages of pneumonia which has caused me to be pretty tired. I have improved but not totally recovered...so we'll see what happens.

Book Review: Heart of Ice by Lis Wiehl

I was given a copy of the book titled Heart of Ice by Lis Wiehl from Thomas Nelson Publishing to review.

Heart of Ice is the third novel in the Triple Threat series involving three friends, Allison Nicole and Cassidy. I have not read the first two books of the series. I did not find it necessary to have read them in order to enjoy this book.

This was the best book I’ve read in a LONG time. I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next! I had trouble putting it down at times…and when I did have to put it down, I couldn’t wait till I could pick it up again!

This books starts out with Allison, Nicole, and Cassidy trying to track down the "Want Ad Killer". This is woven throughout the book. But the main part of the story is based on Elizabeth Avery who is a sociopath. She leads people to believe she is someone she is really not. She has a way to get people to do what she wants them to.

I really enjoyed this book…I was sad that the book ended where it did. It almost seemed like kind of a sudden ending...like there should be more. I really wanted to read more about what happened next. The one thing that I wasn’t so sure of is the “Want Ad Killer” part…it really didn’t have a whole lot to do with the main storyline of the book…but yet kept coming up. I would have liked to see what came of that but there was no conclusion. This is a book that I would definitely recommend to others, especially if you like suspense type books! I am looking forward to reading the other books in this series soon!

Helping Military Families With Your Expired Coupons

With March ending and a April starting...do you have lots of unused, expired coupons??

I wanted to re-post this so that you can send your expired coupons in to help someone else.

The other day I received an email from Julie, a woman who attended one of my coupon workshops. I had mentioned at the workshop that they could donate expired coupons to military families. Julie received the note below from a dear friend of hers and I asked if I could pass the info on to all of you. I was given approval and hope that you all will be willing to help these families!

My oldest son Andy is stationed at a USAF base in England. The base family support center is collecting expired grocery coupons for military families to use at the base grocery store. The store accepts expired coupons up to 6 months after the expiration date.

If you have any coupons that are expired (I hate it when that happens :) ), the family support center at Lakenheath would love to have them.

The envelope (as long as it is of normal weight for a single stamp) takes regular US postage and doesn't need a customs form. The coupons can be for anything normally bought at the grocery store (food, laundry, diapers, shampoo, etc).

Book Review: Lady in Waiting by Susan Meissner

I was given a copy of the book from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group titled Lady in Waiting by Susan Meissner to review.

Lady in Waiting is the story of two Janes. It is a story of Lady Jane Grey from the 16th century and Jane Lindsay from modern day. Their stories are linked together by a ring that Jane Lindsay found in a box from a sale.

I really enjoyed the book. It was interesting throughout and I never felt bored with the book. I was expecting more from the book as far as Christian content. Overall it was a great book and I would recommend it to others!

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.

Homemade Foaming Hand Soap

I posted this about a year and a half ago and thought I'd post again...it saves us quite a bit of money!! With a family of 5, 3 of them being children and with me babysitting, we go through a lot of soap!

You will need:
*liquid handsoap
*an empty foaming soap bottle
(I think Bath & Body Works containers work best...but have also found that Dial containers work well, most of the time)
*water

In your foaming soap container, pour in about 1" of liquid soap. Slowly add warm water to fill the container. Gently rock the container back & forth so that the soap and water will mix well.

And there you have it...Homemade Foaming Hand Soap!

I was given a copy of the book from Thomas Nelson Publishing titled Essentials for Life, Your Back-to-Basics Guide to What Matters Most by Marcia Ford to review.

Essentials for Life is a book that addresses the busy lives we lead and how we need to make sure we put what we value as important first.

I thought this book gave a lot of great tips on how to approach Biblical living. I liked that it was broken down into smaller chapters and there were some suggestions as to what we could DO to live out the topic the chapter covered.

This book is an easy read and I would definitely recommend to someone that is maybe struggling with the chaos of life and having trouble focusing on what is truly important.

I had the opportunity to go on an Emmaus Walk and was away from home Thursday evening until Sunday night. Have you signed up for Swagbucks yet? If so, what do you think of it? What have you purchased with your Swagbucks? I've bought most of my kids' Christmas gifts using the Amazon gift cards I've purchased with the Swagbucks that I have earned.

If you've not heard of it, read on...

I use Swagbucks as my search engine in most cases. You earn Swagbucks when you search...not every single time but I do receive Swagbucks at least a few times a day. The Swagbucks accumulate and then you are able to "purchase" items with them. I choose to purchase Amazon gift cards with mine, but there are so many options!

I've learned that, even though I know the web address for Facebook, for example, I can search it through Swagbucks and possibly earn Swagbucks. There is so much you can do with it to earn more Swagbucks but in my opinion, it requires a lot more time at the computer than I am willing to give to it. I just use it for basic searching that I will be doing anyway.

And on Fridays they have Mega Swagbucks Day. This means that your odds of winning larger denominations are higher.

There is no fee for Swagbucks...it's FREE!! Who couldn't use FREE gift cards!?! If you sign up under my name I can get referral points (which would be much appreciated!!). Use this link or click on the button on the sidebar.

I've had quite a few people ask me how to use this or that they forget to use it. One VERY helpful tip is to download the toolbar. I earn Swagbucks for searching when using this (not every time I search...it is random when you win). If you have time to spend more time on the computer trying to earn Swagbucks, then check out this post by Heather from Spectacular Savings. She has outlined the many ways of earning. I choose to just use it for searching...something that I do on a regular basis...nothing extra.

I was able to buy most of my kids Christmas gifts with the Amazon gift cards I bought with my earned Swagbucks. My goal for next Christmas to be able to buy more than just my kids gifts...we'll see how it goes!?

I just wanted to thank everyone for choosing to read and use this site. I hope you have all found some useful tips along the way and that it has been beneficial to you and your family. I love hearing from people when they say they got their first free item or how much they saved on their grocery bill. It is exciting for them and for me!

I started out doing this site because I realized how much couponing benefited my own family and I felt led to do this as a way of helping others save money too. I figured out the whole way of couponing out of necessity...and still do it out of necessity. We are pretty much a one income family of five, and even though I do it because I have to, I also find it challenging and fun! And that is what I try to encourage most to do with it...make it a game...make it FUN!! One of the other things that I've done over the course of this journey is to encourage people to give to others...whether it be someone you personally know, a food pantry near you, homeless shelters, etc. I know that there have been a lot of people who have been able to donate a lot of stuff to others as a result of couponing...something they never would have been able to do before. And what a blessing that is!

Over the course of the last couple of weeks, since the Extreme Couponing show aired on TLC, I've had a lot of people ask me what I thought. The truth is that I think they are more along the lines of hoarding than anything. One thing that I've tried to keep into perspective is that this IS a TV show and that there are things not shown in a proper light and that maybe these people DO give to others...it just didn't seem that way based on the the mini grocery stores they had in their houses, nor did they show much about giving other than the last guy with the zillion boxes of cereal. While I think it would be very hard for us to accomplish what they did on that show around here due to the coupon usage limitations, I would just like to encourage you to shop responsibly and think of other people. I do encourage picking things up even if you aren't going to use them if it's something you know you can donate. I do NOT encourage wiping out shelves and hoarding. In our house I think our family could probably manage to survive about 4-6 months based on what I have in our cupboards and freezer (w/ the exception of dairy, fresh fruits & veggies and a few other things)...but I think that is reasonable. I also do NOT encourage spending hours figuring out your coupons and then spending 6 hours in a grocery store walking out with several carts and passing up time with family and friends!!

Which then leads me into why I started to write this post...
In all honesty, I have wrestled with what to do with this site for several months now. I've had lots of ideas of what I could do...but I also did not start this site as a way to earn money, nor to turn it into a full-time job or cause me great stress. God has done some pretty amazing things through the site and through the classes for various families and for that I am eternally grateful! In the midst of it all, there have also been some negative things that have happened and they have made me wonder what God has in store for me regarding this site. I've just had to trust Him through it all and let Him take it in the direction it is to go. I've had to learn to let a lot of things roll off my back...sometimes I've done okay with that, and others not so well. Most of these things are things that I have no control over, it's other people's poor choices in how they act, what they say or do, along with other things. I know for a while I allowed Satan to use this junk to deter me from what it was God was calling me to do. I've prayed for God's direction for a long time now and over my kids' Christmas break, when I took a little break from the site, it became very clear to me where I needed to go with this. I realized that there are some things in my life that I really miss and how much freedom I had when I didn't feel obligated to the site. I also realized how stress-free I was when I didn't have to worry about the junk or what people think of me because of what someone else has said.

As some of you may have noticed, I do not do as much with this blog as I used to...for various reasons. One is that it seems I have been a lot busier recently, as has our family as a whole. I started a very part-time job in the fall, and recently quit that to babysit a friend's baby 3 days each week. To do this site, I have given up a lot of things that I truly enjoy and I miss those things...and it's not major things, but it's things like reading! I LOVE to read and just don't do it much anymore...I shouldn't be renewing my book 5 times just to finish it. I have goals for myself that I would like to reach...there are areas of my life that I really need (and want) to focus on this year and I can't do that if I'm attached to my computer. I have put off things that need to be done as well...like laundry and am not nearly as organized as I used to be. I would often feel obligated to post, even when I didn't really have the time. I have often been up very late putting together grocery posts and other posts so that they were available to you. I really don't want to have regrets later in life because I spent too much time on my computer looking for something to post or scouring grocery ads and Hot Coupon World.

The grocery posts are probably the most time consuming thing that I do, but for now, I feel led to continue doing those. I will continue because I think it is the most helpful part on this site as a result of people's feedback and also with the posts being localized to the Toledo area. I can typically get the grocery posts done Sunday night after my kids are in bed and my husband is at youth group. I am totally going to discontinue doing Giant Eagle deals...I just do not have the time mid-week to do those anymore. I also will not be posting random printable coupons that I find. I will be sharing some sites that I would recommend looking at, in the very near future.

I would love to continue sharing the value of couponing with others!! I do intend to have another class soon (keep checking the right sidebar at the top of the page). I've had several ask so I will do that...after this month, I'm not sure. We'll see how things go. I will still do workshops for different groups/organizations, so if you are interested in a coupon workshop for a group, please email me at shelly@shermanshome.com. These workshops will provide you all you need to know about couponing so that you can do it all on your own!

To sum it up I will probably be fairly silent during the week once the grocery posts are up other than maybe my Facebook page...it is so much easier & quicker to post things on there than on here. So if you're not one who "likes" Centsible Shopping...be sure to check it out! Other than that, most of what I post here will be reminders that can be done in advance and put into scheduled posts. I hope that what I am able to give to the site will still be useful to you!

**UPDATE** I've had quite a few people recently ask me how to use this or that they forget to use it. One VERY helpful tip is to download the toolbar. I earn Swagbucks for searching when using this (not every time I search...it is random when you win). If you have time to spend more time on the computer trying to earn Swagbucks, then check out this post by Heather from Spectacular Savings. She has outlined the many ways of earning. I choose to just use it for searching...something that I do on a regular basis...nothing extra.

Have you signed up for Swagbucks yet? If so, what do you think of it? What have you purchased with your Swagbucks? I've bought most of my kids' Christmas gifts using the Amazon gift cards I've purchased with the Swagbucks that I have earned.

If you've not heard of it, read on...

I use Swagbucks as my search engine in most cases. You earn Swagbucks when you search...not every single time but I do receive Swagbucks at least a few times a day. The Swagbucks accumulate and then you are able to "purchase" items with them. I choose to purchase Amazon gift cards with mine, but there are so many options!

I've learned that, even though I know the web address for Facebook, for example, I can search it through Swagbucks and possibly earn Swagbucks. There is so much you can do with it to earn more Swagbucks but in my opinion, it requires a lot more time at the computer than I am willing to give to it. I just use it for basic searching that I will be doing anyway.

And on Fridays they have Mega Swagbucks Day. This means that your odds of winning larger denominations are higher.

There is no fee for Swagbucks...it's FREE!! Who couldn't use FREE gift cards!?! If you sign up under my name I can get referral points (which would be much appreciated!!). Use this link or click on the button on the sidebar.

For those of you that are looking for the grocery posts, I have started them but I have not had a chance to finish them. I will try my best but in case not, I would encourage you to check out Bargains to Bounty or Happy Homemaker Cindy. Both sites are from different areas so pricing and coupon procedures may be a little different...but both sites will at least lead you in the right direction for coupons. Please be aware that they may list coupons that we did not receive here in NW Ohio.
